
We see it all of the time: retired athletes struggle physically and emotionally once their career is over. No longer are fans clamoring for their attention. No longer is there a steady stream of accolades in the media. Athletes of all kinds seem to determine their self-worth and even identity based on their ability to perform in their sport. But we don't have to be professional athletes to derive our identity from being good at something. Clients we meet with often share their fear of not being able to sustain their ability to perform in the gym. As if it is that performance that makes them who they are.
