Die Stimme, der Sound, der Look: die Popmusik war ab Mitte der 80er Jahre um eine Farbe reicher – Sade. Die britische Sängerin Sade Adu bezauberte die Welt mit ihrer Mischung aus Pop und Soul, gemischt mit Anklängen an südamerikanische Musik und Jazz. „Smooth Operator“ wurde zu einem Welthit, auch ihr erstes Album „Diamond Life“ wurde zum ersten Höhepunkt ihrer Karriere. Sades Ausstrahlung trug zu ihrem internationalen Erfolg maßgeblich bei, das ehemalige Model, deren Vater aus Nigeria stammte, wusste sich zu inszenieren. 1985 zeigte sie beim „Live Aid“- Konzert einem Weltpublikum, dass sie mit den internationalen Superstars mithalten konnte. Auch die folgenden Alben überzeugten, das feste Team ihrer Band entwickelte den Sound stetig weiter. Durch längere Pausen in ihrer Karriere entzog sich Sade jedoch immer wieder den Erwartungen des Publikums und der Popwelt.
