Vier Studenten aus Athens, Georgia, geprägt von Glamrock, Folk und Punk, die anfangen, ihre eigene musikalische Sprache zu finden. R.E.M. sind mit ihrem rätselhaften Gitarrenrock schnell Lieblinge der Collegeszene der USA. Später werden sie zu einer zentralen Band der Alternative Rock-Szene. Die flirrende, sofort erkennbare Stimme des Sängers Michael Stipe, dazu seine lyrischen Texte und seine charismatische Bühnenpersönlichkeit – R.E.M. haben mehr und mehr Erfolg.
