„Hotel California“ – ein Geniestreich von einem Lied, komponiert vom Gitarristen Don Felder, getextet und gesungen von Don Henley, musikalisch unvergleichlich umgesetzt durch die Eagles Mitte der 70er Jahre. In der Krise der Band entstand dieser Klassiker, andere folgten, die Eagles hatten es wieder geschafft! Einzelne Musiker hatten die Band verlassen und waren ersetzt worden, dem Sound und der Güte der Musik tat das keinen Abbruch; im Gegenteil, die Ideen kamen an. Aber die Eagles waren nach Jahren auf Tour und auch durch Drogenerfahrungen erschöpft voneinander. Der Mythos der Band schuf Druck auf die Mitglieder. Streit auf offener Bühne und Gerüchte sogar über Handgreiflichkeiten machten die Runde. Anfang der 80er Jahre war die Energie der Eagles zunächst verbraucht. Einzelne Mitglieder strebten Solo-Karrieren an.
