The impact of interiors on our mental health

In our latest podcast episode, Marcus Jankie sits down with Stephanie Clarke, Senior Designer at ClarkeHopkinsClarke Architects, to explore the innovative interior design of Barwon Heath's Mental Health Hub.

Specialising in health and commercial design, Stephanie is passionate about using design to improve the health and wellbeing of patients, visitors, and staff. Through a collaborative co-designing process, Stephanie and her team implemented balanced, holistic design by drawing on clinicians' and patients' expertise, creating one of Victoria's first mental health projects responding directly to the Royal Commission into Mental Health recommendations.

In this episode, Marcus and Stephanie discuss:

  • Trauma-informed design approaches that prioritise wellbeing and nature connection
  • Challenging design assumptions, including why green isn't universally calming and how to balance individual preferences in colour, pattern, and artwork.
  • The intricate process of building trust and the strategic application of materials and wayfinding.
  • Innovative biophilic design principles inspired by diverse commercial and residential architectural approaches.
  • The nuanced strategies of creating healing environments that respect varied personal experiences.
