Of Heartstrings, Roots & Wings - Sarvajeet D Chandra A father’s bond with a growing son Is full of unspoken words Fleeting moments of tenderness An occasional flash of rebellion Odd scuffle for the mother’s attention It needs laughs, conversations Bonhomie over sports and cars Debates over Elon Musk and Mars When the son was a small child The father was a tree with bright eyes In his shelter, life was full of joy On his branches the child could dream & fly As the young man prepares to take flight The father frets to impart the lessons of life The boy needs to grow, be unshackled, undone A father’s dormant desires, speaks to his son Son learns from a father’s example each day To be truthful, live in a compassionate way As souls they’ve journeyed through time and space Shared springs, victory, winters, disgrace A father prays his son will journey light Free of expectations, anxieties, fright Free from the karma of ancestors before May he find his path and journey more Father knows he must believe in his boy Youth must chase what fills its heart with joy And though it’s hard for him to step aside He'll offer to be a friend, to be a guide One day the father will be grey and weak He’ll wonder if my son ever thinks of me He’ll miss the boy who slept on his tummy Who smelt of love, burps, milk and honey Finally the father will fade into gold dust and air His son may sense that he is still there In the high rise, recliner, empty cup of tea In the old car, in the congested city street In blurred skylines, the edges of the sea In his soul, in the warmth of the winter sun The fathers eyes will always guard his son (This poem is dedicated to my son Aarav Chandra & my late father Dr. Dinesh Chandra)
