On this episode of the Union Safety Net, we’re taking a closer look at Alberta’s relationship with the RCMP.
In May 2025, the province passed Bill 49, which establishes the framework for a Provincial Police Force, thereby enabling municipalities to potentially transition away from the RCMP and contract with the province for policing services. There are more than 3600 Alberta residents employed by the RCMP in uniformed, civilian and public servant roles. The Alberta government claims that a newly established provincial police force would be more efficient and cost effective than the current arrangements with the RCMP. However, independently commissioned reports haven’t arrived at the same conclusion. We chatted with Valda Behrens, the Regional Vice President for the Union of Safety and Justice Employees.
