Week three of Spooky Season focuses on Women in Horror! We know there are other horror films directed by women that we would have liked to add to this list (hello The Substance!), but they unfortunately were not on streaming at the time of our watch schedule. This week, we sadly lost one of the greats of our time, Diane Keaton. Her passing came as quite the shock and it seems fitting that we’re celebrating women with these films, even though horror isn’t a genre Keaton is known for. She was unapologetically herself throughout her entire career and she will be deeply missed. Hannah was also able to watch the 2018 Suspiria, Ginger Snaps, Bring Her Back, and E.T., and Ailish watched Basic Instinct.

To be completely honest, these movies weren’t all winners, which was a disappointment coming from female directors. In American Mary, we fall victim to some classic female tropes when it comes to horror that we usually see from male directors. XX on the other hand, was just very poorly executed, even though we felt there was at least one redeeming quality in the anthology. Fresh and Jennifer’s Body were total standouts. We’ve talked about the masterpiece that is Jennifer’s Body in previous episodes, but it felt like we were watching it with different eyes this time around. Megan Fox is amazing in this role and we still feel this film doesn’t get the credit it deserves. Fresh is just a fun film and Sebastian Stan really wins you over with his charisma.
