Mental health in the South Asian community

The phrase “log kya kahenge” (“what will people say”) has suppressed the voices of many in the South Asian community from speaking up about their mental health and we are tired of it! This episode is all about dismantling the stigma surrounding mental health. We talk about the mental health burden faced by South Asians, the impact of intergenerational trauma, the challenges associated with seeking psychological support in a Western country, and the limited education we receive about mental health conditions.

Please do share your thoughts and experiences with us via our Instagram @twobrowngirlsau.

If any of the content from this episode raises feelings of distress, please reach out to your local GP, and if you require immediate support please contact your local crisis hotline. For people living in Australia, that is the Lifeline Crisis Hotline (13 11 14).

In this episode, we share some resources specific to South Asian individuals seeking support or mental health information, as below:

  • Embrace Multicultural Mental Health Network (List of mental health resources and services within all states across Australia): https://embracementalhealth.org.au
  • Shakti Mental Health (List of Australian South Asian mental health practitioners): https://www.shaktimentalhealth.com
  • Australian South Asian Centre (Melbourne based non-profit organisation which offers mental health resources, and can also help vulnerable people who are escaping situations of violence seek shelter and offer other more immediate and practical services) : https://australiansouthasiancentre.com
  • Instagram Account @southasiantherapists (Instagram account with South Asian relevant mental health content and a directory for South Asian Therapists internationally.)
