Te Matatini

What motivates literally thousands of people to travel hundreds of miles week in, week out, for no pay, in their own time for months on end, for maybe, only 25 minutes on stage. Tukua was at Te Matatini, the Māori kapa haka Olympics finals day to find out.

Tukua is 75-year-old arts activist and author, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, Gen Z sculptor Brett Graham and 24-year-old standup comedian, Kura Turuwhenua.

We take you to the event, interview the creatives involved and then discuss it back in the RNZ studio.

Our focus is on Māori and Pasifika artists but no-one is safe from the Tukua lens.

Guests:

  • Kereama Wright – Ngati Whakaue senior member
  • Wharehoka Wano – Representative for Te Kahui Maunga Iwi Society
  • Pere Wihongi – Kaitataki Tane Angitu
