2024 European Elections - Ep. 4: France’s Invisible Demography : Julien Talpin’s Qualitative Research in Stigmatised Neighbourhoods

transform! europe network presents: Strategies For the Radical Left in the 2024 European Elections, a series of interviews with sociologists and political researchers of the European electorate ahead of the 2024 European election.

This episode has a special focus on France and French politics. To take an angle that is rarely talked about, Anaïs Fley interviewed Julien Talpin, a French sociologist and qualitative researcher in the field of stigmatised neighbourhoods in France. Because of the law on “laïcité”, any quantitative research on race isn’t possible in France. Julien Talpin’s work is therefore valuable, because it reveals how the ordinary experience of discrimination is a vector of political subjectivity, and can be the cause of disenchantment with politics. With this approach, we can reflect on a future where inclusive politics and politicians could play a part in a more democratic France.

For more information on J. Talpin’s work here is a link for his bibliography.
