This Tigerhall Trail, ‘Why is Being a Working Mother Still so Sh*t’, was first released on International Women's Day 2023, aiming to explore the motherhood penalty, the maternal wall and the “broken rung” - and what individuals and leaders can do to tackle bias.

Whether you’re a working mother who can relate to this, a future parent who is scared that having kids could affect your career, or an HR or people leader who wants to make sure your organization is inclusive for all - this Trail is for you.

Shu Matsuo Post - Why Paternity Leave Matters for Mothers: With a Feminist Dad and Husband

What happens when you take a seven month paternity leave in gender-rigid Japan? That’s what Shu Matsuo Post did, and as he’ll tell you, the experience was “priceless”. Join Shu as he shares his story and explains how if more men take parental leave, it levels the playing field for women.

Shu Matsuo Post is author of “I Took Her Name”, where he documented his experience of taking his wife's last name in gender-rigid Japan. He is the former MD of Flash Coffee in Japan.

Useful Notes & Resources:

  • Via a survey in 2021, 100% of men were glad they took paternity leave and would do so again; 90% noticed an improvement in their relationship with their partner; and 20% felt that the risk of a career setback was the main downside but that the benefits outweighed that worry. One in four fathers wished that they had longer paid paternity leave (McKinsey)
  • Despite parental leave being shown to promote equality and allowing organizations to retain workers, fewer employers in the United States are offering paid maternity and paternity leave (World Economic Forum, 2022)
