The Morality of Foreign Aid

Benz and Tef return to discuss the involvement of the West in African affairs, with their "Net Positive or Not" format.

In this season 3 finale, they take on two big names:

First up, one of the most powerful financial institutions in the world, the International Monetary Fund (aka IMF). The IMF is a an agency of the UN, funded by 191 member countries, originally created to help governments in economic distress.

But many critics suggest the way it operates exploits the Global South for the benefit of the West.Tef choses to focus on the impact of IMF's loans in Nigeria, oil rich African nation. Benz picks Greece, a struggling European economy as his case study.

Next up BandAid, the charitable organisation that raised money in response to Ethiopian famines in the 1980s. The collective of musicians created a charity single that became a cultural phenomenon—did it truly help, or did feed their White Saviour Complexes?

Recently, Ghanian artist Fuse ODG claimed that the collective did more harm than good to the continent of Africa as a whole by reinforcing negative stereotypes about Africa and treating continent as a monolith.
