The Deep Ocean and Us

Welcome to the season finale of Think Deep! and thanks for listening! If you enjoy this episode, be sure to subscribe and leave us a rating.

In this episode, we are wrapping up the season by reflecting on what we’ve learned and what still lies ahead, with the team behind the podcast. We’re debriefing about all the topics covered in this season and exploring the wider context of deep-ocean governance from the perspectives of three early-career researchers – Dr Elin Thomas, deep-sea scientist and DOSI’s Communication Manager; Eesha Rangani, public policy master student in the Global School of Policy and Strategy at UC San Diego; and Michelle Guraieb, oceanographer and host of Think Deep!

Check out the resources below and get involved in deep-ocean stewardship and governance today!

    • Join one of DOSI’s specialist Working Groups or overarching Task Forces – there’s something for everyone, and it’s a great way to get started in the science-policy space.
    • Get involved with YOUNGO (The Official Youth Constituency of the UNFCCC) and RINGO (Research and Independent Non-Governmental Organisations constituency to the UNFCCC) as Eesha suggested in the episode.
    • Check out the Ocean Discovery League website to find out more about their Accessing the Deep training and mentoring programme that Michelle mentioned.
    • Follow along with livestreams of deep-sea research and exploration in action with the Ocean Exploration Trust and Schmidt Ocean Institute – amazing resources that bring the deep ocean directly to you.
    • Subscribe to our weekly newsletter, the Deep-Sea Round-Up, for all the latest deep-sea research, news and opportunities.

Finally, if you’re looking for more podcasts about the deep sea or ocean governance, be sure to check out Negotiating the Ocean from the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security, for conversations with people from all over the world directly involved in international ocean negotiations, and The Deep-Sea Podcast for a punk take on the science with Dr Thom Linley and Professor Alan Jamieson!
