Ecosystems to Species - The Importance of Scale

Welcome to the penultimate episode of this series of Think Deep!, and thanks for listening! If you enjoy this episode, be sure to subscribe and leave us a rating.

In this episode, we discuss the importance of scale in ocean governance with Professor Kerry Sink. Kerry is the marine program manager and a principal scientist at the South African National Biodiversity Institute. We’re so lucky to have Kerry joining the podcast to share her knowledge and experiences in marine spatial planning and the design of marine protected areas.

Check out the resources below to learn more about the role of marine spatial planning in deep-ocean governance:

  • Learn more about the Global Biodiversity Framework's ‘30x30’ Target discussed during the episode – an international goal to conserve 30% of the ocean by 2030. The IUCN have created a detailed guide to the target and its implementation, which you can find here.

  • Kerry talks about the importance of engaging with all different stakeholders and the complexities of navigating these relationships. Kerry developed a schematic called the stakeholder onion to illustrate the various stakeholder processes at play. Learn more about the onion and MPA design in this paper.

  • Learn more about Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems – what they are, how they’re identified, and more – from the FAO website.

  • Subscribe to our weekly newsletter, the Deep-Sea Round-Up, for all the latest deep-sea research, news and opportunities.

Finally, if you’re looking for more podcasts about the deep sea or ocean governance, be sure to check out Negotiating the Ocean from the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security, for conversations with people from all over the world directly involved in international ocean negotiations, and The Deep-Sea Podcast for a punk take on the science with Dr Thom Linley and Professor Alan Jamieson!
