Silk Magazine is an online media collective dedicated to supporting Black artists and showing the world that Black art does not exist in one form. In this podcast series, we will be sitting down with Black artists for long form, intimate interviews that explore the relationships between artists’ lives, their art, and the world at large. We hope these conversations will give listeners an authentic look into who these musicians are as people, which we feel is important in a journalistic landscape that often misrepresents and dehumanizes Black artists.

Sefu: The Human Sword

For the second episode of the Silk Magazine Podcast, we had the honor of sitting down with Houston rapper-producer Sefu. Wearing a politics of Black liberation on his sleeve and a refusal to compromise his vision, Sefu’s music reflects his abilities as vulnerable lyricist and skilled sonic painter. Self produced projects like 2020’s GOD IS A BLACK WOMAN, 2021’s STARS ARE BORN IN PAIRS and the upcoming THE SWORD DREW BLOOD, which releases tomorrow December 31st, reveal carefully crafted worlds for the listener to linger in. Sefu’s talent and intellect evokes his namesake, the Swahili term for sword. In our conversation, we learned more about Sefu’s inspirations, his process of pushing himself creatively for this new album, and the community he’s been able to find through art.
