Dr David Scott works at The Open University. He was the inaugural chair of the Open University module DD105 Introduction to Criminology, which is the largest criminology module (in terms of student numbers) in the UK. He is a former co-ordinator of the European Group for the Study of Deviance and Social Control, the most established critical criminology society in Europe, and a founding member and chair of the Weavers Uprising Bicentennial Committee, which is a public history project aiming t to raise awareness of the 1826 weavers uprising in East Lancashire. Over the last few years, David has been campaigning against government prison building plans and is co-author of the- recent independent report Four New Prisons Programme: Chorley Prison - The Case Against. He is a member of the academic advisory group for INQUEST, which supports the families of people who die in state custody and has published widely on prisons, punishment and penal abolition. Recent books include Against Imprisonment (2018) and For Abolition (2020) and the co-edited volume The International Handbook of Penal Abolition (2021).
