This Victorian-era dramedy was adapted by playwright/critic John Oxenford from Eugene Scribe and Ernst Legouvé’s “Les doigts de fée” (“Fairy Fingers.”) The original play was first performed by the Comédie-Française in 1861. It tells the story of an impoverished young noblewoman who scandalizes her blue-blooded kinsmen by deciding to work for a living. She assumes a false name and enters the world of high fashion, becoming one of Paris’ most sought-after couturiers. Complications of mistaken identity and romantic misunderstandings ensue. Our heroine must become reconciled with both her haughty relatives and her beloved, Adolphe, before all threads of the plot can be resolved!
