MLMs are popping up everywhere offering everything from shampoo to legal services to weight loss programs. The industry's value is approaching $200 billion with its promises of the #bossbabe lifestyle - set your own hours, work from home, make money while on vacation, etc. etc. But the backlash to these companies has been growing in recent years and with good reason - it's estimated that only around 1% of multilevel marketing (or networking marketing) distributors actually make a profit. In this episode, Marissa is joined by Haley O'Bryan, a therapist, anti-MLM content creator, and recent graduate student whose research focused on MLMs, to discuss the impacts these companies have on distributors and customers and their concerns with this model of operating.
