Episode 29: Legacy and Intergenerational Wealth: Optimizing Your Family Wealth Decisions  / Richard Orlando

Are you seeking the keys to creating lasting wealth and leaving a meaningful legacy?

Delving into the depths of wealth creation and legacy building requires more than just financial acumen—it calls for a vision that transcends generations. The pursuit of lasting wealth isn't merely about accumulating assets; it's about crafting a narrative that leaves an indelible mark on the world.

In episode 29 of The True Wealth Project podcast, Sascha Janzen has an insightful conversation with Richard Orlando, the founder of Legacy Capitals, about the concepts of legacy and intergenerational wealth.

With over 25 years of experience, Richard has advised high and ultra-high-net-worth families, many of whom are leaders of family enterprises. He has also trained thousands of advisors to incorporate qualitative, multi-generational planning into their financial services.

Before founding Legacy Capitals, Dr. Orlando spent fifteen years leading Merrill Lynch’s Global Practice Management Consulting Group and worked in Merrill’s Family Office division. His insights have been featured in various publications, including The New York Times, Bloomberg Business, and The Wall Street Journal online.

Dr. Orlando holds a diverse educational background, including a Bachelor of Science in computer science and business from St. John’s University. He pursued a Wall Street career after obtaining Series 7 and 63 licenses, later earning a master’s in counseling/theology from Trinity International University and a doctorate in family systems from Seton Hall University, focusing on wealth management family teams. He instructs for the Investments & Wealth Institute’s CPWA Certification Program, is a faculty member of the UHNW Institute, and holds a family wealth advising certificate from the Family Firm Institute. Dr. Orlando is also a certified professional coach through the International Coach Federation.

He is also the author of “Legacy: The Hidden Keys to Optimizing Your Family Wealth Decisions” and “Love Your Clients: the tale of the Whole Family Advisor”.

During the episode, Richard addresses five different types of capital that every family should develop and build. He also poses five questions that every family needs to work through when developing an intentional legacy.

Richard emphasizes the importance of love and impact, as well as the challenges of serving multiple generations within families. He also shares insights on raising happy children, transferring wealth, preparing the next generation, and handling family conflicts.

Richard and Sascha also talk about the essence of legacy in family wealth, what it means to have a legacy mindset, the challenges of first and second generation wealth, about impact investing and generational perspectives and more.

As Richard reflects on his legacy, he hopes to be remembered for his dedication to helping families thrive across generations. With a focus on building bridges, fostering communication, and empowering future leaders, Richard's impact extends far beyond financial planning—it's about nurturing the soul of family wealth.
