Three Ravens is an English myth and folklore podcast hosted by Eleanor Conlon and Martin Vaux.

In each weekly episode, released on Mondays, we explore a historic county, digging into the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more.

Across our first six series we ventured around England's 39 historic counties twice, taking turns to tell a new version of a legend from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it may have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past.

Our Bonus Episodes are then released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Forgotten Melodies about folk song types with original performances from us, and Magus, which is about the lives of the most famous witches and wizards in history).

On Saturdays, we then release episodes of our interview series Local Legends, with each episode featuring a chat between us and an acclaimed folklorist, author, podcaster or historian, deepening discussions about that week's county.

In between series, since March 2025 we have also launched our Lang Fairy Tale Project, for which we are recording and releasing the 700+ stories collected by English academics and authors Nora and Andrew Lang, published in over a dozen volumes from the end of the 19th century and changing children's literature forever.

With entire other Bonus Series to enjoy, including our comic retelling of the legend of Gawain and the Green Knight, original narratives such as our upcoming series Dog Days about the supernatural adventures of young playwright Christopher Marlowe in Elizabethan London, and our annual Haunting Season every October, there's tonnes of fun to be had in our back catalogue of over 300 episodes.

In addition to which, we also release a range of exclusive content on Patreon, where supporters also enjoy ad-free listening, including monthly 'One Off' episodes covering a range of folky topics, editions of the Three Ravens Newsletter, and over two-dozen episodes of the Three Ravens Film Club, through which we discuss folk horror films from across the decades, and more.

For a guide of where to start, click here - but our advice is to just pick an episode that sounds interesting, then hit 'Play' and join us around the campfire to listen in...

Three Ravens Series 7 will launch in September 2025, and will be all about the heritage and legends of the 13 historic counties of Wales. Dog Days: Chapter 11 - Chase the Stars from Heaven

We start the week with Chapter 11 of Dog Days, during which we find Kit Marlowe high-tailing it to The Mermaid Tavern on the north bank of the Thames.

A nexus for traders, actors, spies and thieves, Kit expects to be waylaid there, but must not dally: his meeting with the Wizard Earl is close at hand, and the night dark above him.

All he needs to do is enter the place, go through largely unseen, and then proceed, alone, to Syon House.

A simple sounding task.

Dog Days: Chapter 10 - Thy Words Are Swords

Hey, you know a cool thing? Today's episode of Dog Days means we are now a third of the way through the story. Thank you so much to you, and all of the people listening, for making us part of your own 'Hot Dog Summer!' Downloads are up 20% month on month, and 37% in just the last seven days!

As for the contents of this chapter, well, suitably freaked out by Harriot and Hues, Kit wants to get the Earl of Oxford's ring off his finger. It's the afternoon, and he has time before he needs to get to Syon House. But where is de Vere?

First stop is the Theatre, but very soon Kit comes to understand that getting free of the Blind Eye might be a tad more complicated than he first thought...

Dog Days: Chapter 9 - Rise Aloft and Touch The Hornéd Moon

For today's episode of Dog Days we have a slightly shorter chapter, though one filled with revelations care of a pair of the Earl of Northumberland's closest allies, Hues and Harriot, two of the 'Three Magi.'

While they speak, in the shattered ruins of the 'Jew Gardens' - a historic graveyard left to grow wild - the sun shines down from above, and Kit feels something rising within him - a new kind of heat that certainly seems supernatural.

Yet picking apart all of Hues' provocations and Harriot's kind overtures, Kit believes he has begun to piece things together.

Though the location of 'The Rainbow' remains a mystery, he now has good reasons to believe his enemies may be men he before thought allies - foes wearing masks of friendship which have started to slip...

Dog Days: Chapter 7 - Sweetness To My Wound

During today's episode of Dog Days we catch up with Barnaby, who has been waiting up for Kit. And waiting. And waiting.

Two men from very different walks of life, events have brought them together. Yet one has almost died overnight, battling with demons, while the other has been at church, marking the start of Lammastide.

As Barnaby helps Kit to wash, and aids him in his wounded state, what thoughts might either have about their future?

Many, but also very few, for in these quiet moments they are, at least, together.

Our sixth episode of Dog Days finds our hero weary from a long day beneath the baking heat - yet the dying hours of Lammastide still have some tricks up their sleeves before Kit Marlowe can lay his sweaty, bewildered head down to rest.

After all, his problems are hardly going to resolve themselves, and when he hears footsteps dogging his own he wonders if it is a new perplexity or an old one.

Either way, he is left with few choices.

Should he attempt to flee, or stand and fight?

Without knowing what it is he would be fighting, perhaps it would be best just to run.

Then again, that's all provided he can run faster than whatever it is behind him, giving chase...

The Three Ravens Podcast
Dog Days: Chapter 4 - New Fancies’ Shapes

Reunited with his sister, who he really wishes would go back to Canterbury, the fourth episode of Dog Days sees Kit Marlowe following up on his wishes to have, in a list of descending priority, tobacco, breakfast, and a sword of some kind - even if it's purely a show piece.

This takes him across London Bridge and into Southwark, to The Rose, a rival playhouse and the domain of Philip Henslowe.

Henslowe is canny, an eye ever to his books, but he may have a blind spot - for the workers at the brothel attached to his theatre are scared: brutal murders are taking place around them, and these crimes seem more like the work of monsters than men...

Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.

Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...

The Three Ravens Podcast
Dog Days: Chapter 3 - The Shining Palace of the Sun

In today's episode of Dog Days, Kit Marlowe finally arrives at work, where he finds the entire company of The Theatre, under Ned Alleyne, awaiting the arrival of his new script: Tamburlaine The Great Part 2.

Yet Kit is unwilling to part with his pages until he gets paid. Which is why we find him outside of the Earl of Oxford's rooms, negotiating with a private guard who is as thick as mince while a company of increasingly hot and sweaty actors wait in the yard, trying not to look at what Oxford, a.k.a. Edward de Vere, is up to in the "Lord's Room" that happens to be fully visible to anyone below The Theatre's oak-beamed gallery...

We hope that this one makes you laugh as much as it might disturb, and can't wait for you to hear tomorrow's episode, which will take us south of the river!

The Three Ravens Podcast
Dog Days: Chapter 2 - Lord Of My Fortune

On today's episode, we pick up right where yesterday's chapter left off - with Kit Marlowe cracked over the back of the head with a club and bundled into a pure black covered carriage.

The person waiting within is cool and calm, despite the summer heat.

Old, dying, yet phenomenally powerful, Sir Francis Walsingham is Queen Elizabeth's Secretary of State. Like a spider at the heart of a web, he has agents everywhere - but the one he has most pressing business with is the young playwright sat before him.

Specifically, Walsingham has a mission for Kit to undertake. Although Walsingham's code name speaks of his true nature, for while Marlowe might be known as 'Ganymede,' the young boy lover of the God of Gods, Sir Francis is known as 'Janus' - the two-faced deity of both endings and beginnings...

The Three Ravens Podcast
Dog Days: Chapter 1 - Like Summer’s Vapours

As long heralded, and under the influence of the Canis Dog Star, we warmly present the first installment of our Bonus Series project for August 2025!

Set in 1589, Dog Days follows young English playwright, poet, spy and bounder Christopher 'Kit' Marlowe who, when we meet him, is fast asleep and drenched with sweat in his newly-acquired rooms in Norton Folgate, London.

Yet, beneath the sweltering summer heat, Kit has quite a lot on his plate - including French Catholic agents trying to kill him, a new play script he owes to the Earl of Oxford, a secret mission he has been tasked with by Sir Francis Walsingham, his relationship with his new bedfellow, Barnaby Raynott, and then there's the matter of the strange girl who appears at his window bringing news that he really does not want to hear.

Expect new chapters to release every day throughout the month containing swashbuckling action, esoteric lore, demonic hellhounds, lots of jokes, and kissing.

See you again tomorrow for Chapter 2!

The Three Ravens Podcast
August Update: IT'S HOT DOG SUMMER!!!

Well hello, hey, and hi there - we're currently at Black Shuck Festival in Suffolk doing a whole bunch of Three Ravens-related stuff, but, as it has been over a month since the end of Series 6, we thought that today, on Lammas Day, we might release this little update episode about what's been going on with us.

To sweeten the deal, we have included excerpts from our two Patreon Exclusive episodes for July 2025, including a chunk of our discussion of 'The Books That Made Us' and the opening section of our Film Club episode, as released yesterday, about the wildly entertaining 1988 cult horror comedy movie 'The Lair of the White Worm.'

While those things close the episode out, beforehand we have news about recent collaboration episodes made with some of our favourite podcasters, updates on our first sponsor - Three Spirit Drinks (use Offer Code THREERAVENS for 15% off any purchase!) and the rather momentous milestone we've literally just crossed - of half a million downloads!

With lots of other bits of incidental chat, we know that for members of our Patreon community some of this isn't exactly new news, but nonetheless, if you have been chilling and not really following goings-on while episodes of our Lang Fairy Tales Project have been coming out then consider this a digest of what you might have missed.

We really hope you enjoy it, and that you also enjoy Dog Days - we will have new chapters releasing every day on the main and Patreon podcast feeds throughout the month, so let's let 'Hot Dog Summer' off the leash and howl together at the Barley Moon!

The Three Ravens Podcast
'Snow White and Rose Red' and 'Toads and Diamonds'

For the final Lang Fairy Tales episode of this 'between series break' we have another double bill for you!

We begin with Snow White and Rose Red. And if you thought the recent Disney adaptation missed the mark compared to the original, you need to check out the original and imagine how different and brilliant a film they could have made.

Then it's time for another tiddler: Toads and Diamonds, which plays with similar ideas, including models of sisterhood - and this one we would truly love the 'House of Mouse' to have a go at!

If you are unfamiliar with the Lang Fairy Tales, these seminal collections were assembled between 1889 and 1913 by a married couple, folklorists and translators Nora and Andrew Lang, with most of the work done to compile them completed by Nora, also known as Leonora Blanche Alleyne.

Assembled and published in 12 colour-coded "Fairy Books," the corpus the Langs put together included 798 fairy tales from across cultures, many of which had never before been translated into English.

They were amongst the most influential books of their time, changing the course of children's literature - although they're hardly just for children, and often deal with quite challenging concepts.

Today, purchasing a complete set of the Lang Fairy Books in good condition costs over £4,000 ($5,000+).

Thankfully, the collections are all out of copyright, meaning that we can now tell these stories, in podcast form, many for the first time, and share them with a global audience, for free.

Our plan is to release the stories between main series of Three Ravens, performing them straight (though with plenty of silly voices) letting the tales speak for themselves in all their madcap, sharp-edged, often quite bizarre glory.

The only edits we have made are to amend some culturally-insensitive epithets, which typically pertain to ethnicity, with any such edits made by Eleanor Conlon.

The Three Ravens Podcast
Hansel and Gretel

Come inside, children!

Today, to start a new week with a bang, we present an all-time Hall of Fame fairytale: Hansel and Gretel.

If you listened to Little Thumb last week, note how this time it's the father who is sympathetic instead of the mother; also, while 'Little Thumb' encountered a masculine flesh-eating other, this week it's a feminine one.

They're partner tales - but not the same one. Why?

Also, really sorry about the slight buzz on Eleanor's vocal. We've bought some new microphone cables, so it hopefully won't happen again!

The Three Ravens Podcast
