The Third Beer is a regular Podcast hosted by Psychologist Chris Dickson and Brett McCallum. Each week they invite a special guest into the studio to talk about men’s health, mental health and general wellbeing whilst sharing a few beers. The focus is on those subjects that blokes find it hard to talk about. Brett has already shared a year-long mental health journey with the help of Chris, and although he is still a work-in-progress, Brett has seen himself become a better human being. While the chat with each week’s special guest will take place in a very informal setting and with an informal style, the conversation and topics are taken 100% seriously. Lets break down personal and world issues, one beer at a time.

The Third Beer with Keiron Byrne (again)
This week on the Third Beer Podcast, Chris Dickson and I are lucky enough to be joined for the third time by our good friend, Keiron Byrne. Keiron is a psychologist specialising in positive psychology, as well as a high-school basketball coach. I don’t know why he keeps coming back, as an allergy to fructose keeps him from drinking beer with us, but he must just like our company. Despite the lack of Dutch courage, we still manage to go deep about subjects most blokes find difficult to talk about. We discuss the overwhelming fatigue felt by a lot of people this year, going deep into and struggling (or not wanting) to get back out of our caves, and whether we are being alive every day, or dying every day. Crack a cold one, and listen to the full episode of the Full Beer Podcast here. Enjoy, cheers!

The Third Beer with Cato Sibthorpe
In Today’s Third Beer podcast, we have special guest Cato Sibthorpe, a young entrepreneur who has experienced the trials of life at a very young and bounced back with a personal vision to become the best person he can be. Brett met Cato at a speech he did and was immediately amazed at his dedication to living life to the fullest at such a young age. Cato opens up about how one mistake when he was a teenager woke him up to realise, the path he was going down was leaving him empty. He speaks about his mental health through that time and gives advice on how to get through these low points. We also learn that Cato has a business called Bonafide Fitness where he trains young men around his age to assist them physically, but also to bring a sense of brotherhood in their lives. Cato also has a main vision in life to work with school kids. He has been lucky enough to have already spoken at a school, to show them that life can bring so many amazing opportunities, more than what they think. Tune in today to hear about his inspiring story and advice!

The Third Beer with Keiron Byrne
This week on The Third Beer podcast previous guest Kieron Byrne returns to join Chris Dickson and I. Kieron is a psychologist specializing in positive psychology, a talented basketball coach to teenage boys, and is an amazing mate to my co-host Chris Dickson. Ironically, Kieron is unable to drink a beer on the Third Beer podcast as he will go into a coma and die if he consumes any fructose. No joke! As per usual on the Third Beer Podcast, we talk about subjects that blokes find hard to talk about. Today’s topic being the global pandemic, COVID-19. We discuss how COVID has impacted our lives, what lessons it has taught us, and all the highs and lows of this virus. We also reflect on whether or not COVID has taken a toll on our mental health and wellbeing. Have a beer for fructose intolerant Kieron and listen to the full episode on The Third Beer Podcast here. Enjoy, cheers!

On our latest episode of The Third Beer, Brett and Chris are joined by the courageous Justin Gambino who was a victim of domestic violence from his ex-wife. The Third Beer Episode 20 Jason Darrington
Happy New Year! Our first episode for 2019 is with my favourite cohost and therapist Chris Dickson, and special guest Jason Darrington. Jason has worked with Porsche in England and China for 10+ years and moved to Australia last year with his wife Dominica and four kids. I have four kids too. Hang on! Chris has four kids as well. What a crazy coincidence. Jason is also cofounder of Parenthoodlum, a community for parents to share and learn whilst navigating the crazy and amazing job of raising children. In this show Jason shares his special life story and leads to why him and his wife started Parenthoodlum. The three of us as fathers’ banter over a bevy about kids and social media, nurture vs nature, and much more. If you’ve been listening along so far, Chris and I update you on what has happened in our lives since the last episode. There are always a few laughs because if we didn’t laugh at life we’d probably cry, especially if Paul Kelly comes on the radio (more on that story). Join us for the The Third Beer podcast where we talk about things men don’t often talk about.

The Third Beer First Beer Episode 19 Kieron And Alex
This week on The Third Beer podcast Kieron Byrne joins Chris Dickson again, two psychologists and close colleagues with a lot of personal history shared. The Third guest is Alex Fischer, a student of philosophy, law and business who has listened to every podcast. We hear what Alex saw as a similar theme (by accident) through all the episodes and guests on the show – and it is . All three guys reflect on the season so far. Epically, at 24 years old Alex drinks his first beer on the show but it’s not a show about lowering inhibitions. Well actually it is, the episode raises the big topic of love and with two therapist’s and a student philosopher in the room, love is analysed in all it’s forms: the good bad and the ugly. Does love conquer all? Find out on The Third Beer podcast.

The Third Beer Podcast
The Third Beer Episode 18 Tiah Goldstein
We’ve asked Tiah Goldstein to join Chris Dickson and I on the podcast with a loose theme around manifestation. Tiah Goldstein is founder of Interwoven, an accelerator focused on high impact startups. Tiah’s skills are too long to mention but one her anchors is community economic development and organisational change, not to mention she’s lived and worked in many cultures. Do you have a talisman to help you be the best person you want to be? The chat moves around the concept of whether manifesting is good, bad or even real. There’s debate around the power of intention and how this differs greatly between Eastern philosophies like Buddhism and mainstream Western self-help beliefs that are focused on ‘acting’ rather than ‘being’. Is mainstream self-help going about it the right way? We are not experts in these topics but we three tackle them from our unique perspectives, and so any listener can get their head around ways we use our mind to create our reality. Or do we? It’s time for The Third Beer.

The Third Beer Episode 17 Greg Przybylski
It’s time for The Third Beer podcast and today’s guest is my close mate, a brother from another mother, Greg Przybylski. Co-host therapist (and now yoga instructor) Chris Dickson completes the trio. Greg has been there for me in some of my toughest moments. He’s worked overseas on super yachts for decades but even a voice on a phone is really important when you need support. When Greg is at port we always make time for each other. I steer the topics after spending an afternoon with my marketing hero, Gary Vaynerchuk! Greg, Chris and I chat around numerous motivational personalities of our generation. There’s some cracker quotes flying around the room today. Chris challenges this mainstream self-help with Buddhism principles, which is an absolute head-spin in perspective. Is mindful meditation actually helpful? Chris tests Brett on why we strive? Is it for happiness or for a million dollars? And last but not least, can negative words like ‘fail’ motivate and cause positivity or should negative wording be removed from the self-help industry? It’s quite journey through today’s beer tasting because remember: life’s a journey not a race.

Megan Wolfenden has also had someone she knows want to end their life at the age of 20. This podcast is dedicated to things we don’t talk about enough, in an effort to help and heal a wider audience. Chris Dickson, my co-host and psychologist, brings thoughtful insight. This chat over a beer taste brings up further wicked problems of modern life including addictive behaviours to both legal and illegal substances. With all three of us growing large families, we explore our parental intentions to guide our teenagers to adulthood. Find out what board game is assured to bond you and your teens together so you can have mature, open conversations about sex, drugs and rock and roll – all part of growing up today.

The Third Beer Episode 15 Dr Kelly Bowers
This week The Third Beer podcast mixes things up and Kieron Byrne joins Chris Dickson as co-host. You will remember Kieron from episode two. Our guest is Dr Kelly Bowers. So what happens when you put three psychologists in a room? We explore Kieron’s expertise and how optimal performance can be achieved generally, and within all levels of sport. Performance for soldiers, astronauts and explorers is thrown in the mix. The trio analyse the Australian sporting culture of ‘winners take all’ and how may be destructive to the entire industry starting in schools, and ending at the top. Both Kieron and Kelly work with young athletes and offer alternative futures for coaching and parenting to produce more resilient sportspeople with longer careers. As usual, it’s a podcast daring to raise questions many are too afraid to ask, and the answers are both positive and entirely achievable.

The Third Beer Episode 13 Terry Magpie Playle
Terry Magpie Playle is our guest on The Third Beer podcast. He is passionate about acts of kindness. After a special realisation at a retreat, in a dark time of his life, he is shifting his business skills to social enterprise. Terry generously shares his story and wants more men like him to open up to save their own health. It really is the stuff of folk tale. As part of his healing, Terry stopped denying his indigenous roots after his Nan passed away, a Barkindji Murray River woman and author and activist of the stolen generation. Find out why Terry is called Magpie. It’s unbelievable! This podcast is as always about men’s life journeys and this episode is, as Terry puts it so poetically, how one drop in a billabong can have a ripple effect

The Third Beer Episode 12 Paul Holland
It’s time for The Third Beer podcast with my co-host therapist Chris Dickson and a brother from another mother: Paul Holland. The day we met it was like long lost souls had banged heads together, because we’d gone though very similar challenges: the ups and downs of business, and financial highs and lows. We clicked because we were both building businesses at the same time, and we helped each other through. After video production for decades for TV and movies like Lord of the Rings, Paul moved his kiwi family to Australia, and started his own business in digital marketing. The transition was too much for his marriage. In The Third Beer, we talk about things men don’t talk about over a beer. Paul generously shares his professional and personal challenges during a four-year separation and how to be a good dad to kids living across the Tasman Sea. Don’t be put off by the big topics there’s plenty of funny digs and banter. Check it out. #community #health #media8 #thethirdbeer

Another legendary local man has joined us on The Third Beer podcast. Marco Renai owns Healthy Lifestyle Club and gives back with Men on Business charity raising near to $100,000 annually for youth at risk. Marco is a true entrepreneur and has evolved his health business many times over the last 15 years. Marco shares his own story of battling demons of excess, and became a personal trainer to win that fight. It’s so inspiring hearing Marco talk passionately about being there for young men who desperately need quality time, life skills and role models. Marco is also an Iron Man and to me, he’s a champion on so many levels. Check out Marco Renai chatting to Chris Dickson and I over another beer road test.

The Third Beer Episode 10 Mike Campbell
When I met Mike Campbell this year, I was excited to find out that we both have a men’s health project, AND with the word ‘beer’ in them! What are the chances? The Third Beer podcast chats with Mike Campbell of Beyond The Beers Show. Mike is a ‘man coach’ and founder of The School of Personal Mastery. He is also author of Unleashing the Alpha. Mike started a career as a personal trainer and realised many clients’ physical goals were intertwined with emotional goals that also needed a workout. After seeing the same challenges over and over, today his solution is a powerful support system for men. My favourite therapist and co-host Chris Dickson joins us as always, an experienced voice in stuff men don’t talk about. We compare notes and Mike also bravely shares his personal growth as a modern-day male – and don’t forget! - we road test another beer. Are you ready for The Third Beer!?

The Third Beer Episode 9 Greg Anderson
The Third Beer this week is guest Greg Anderson. He has worked in security on the Gold Coast for many years including a few years on the Glitter Strip. He’s worked with guard dogs and armoured vehicles. He’s a former karate kid and ultra-heavy weight kickboxing fighter, a current gun enthusiast, and social gamer. He is a massive unit with the low voice to prove it (cue Barry White). Greg has more crazy stories than we’ve got time for one episode. He’s also got some funny one-liners. Peek inside the life of a Gold Coast ‘hard man’ and family man, and it wouldn’t be The Third Beer without a contradiction thrown in for good measure.
