Ed White. Champion Runner.
My Next guest is Ed White. Ed has spent a little over 40 years obsessing about running fast. In his heyday Ed represented Britain as a 200 metre and 400 metre runner, with his most prestigious moment being selected as the “first leg“ runner of Britain’s 4x400 metre relay team at the 2000 European Championships. Now, some 20 years later, he still applies his craft, and competes as a Masters athlete on the international circuit. At home, you are a proud father of 4 and, for a crust, you worked in commercial real estate as a sales mentor and now runs his own business motivation consultancy. Ed has been a member of Northstar Jujitsu, since its early inception and achieved his 2nd Dan back in 2012. He describes completing his 1st Dan as one of his greatest achievements and moments in life. By his own admission Ed is no stranger to the duality of life, with its trials and tribulations. But searching for a better way remains his quest. Contact Ed: e.b.w.white@hotmail.com

The Stand Tall Podcast
Rob Dosoruth. Kicking butt in 2021.
Robin Dosoruth has been training in Northstar Ju Jitsu for over 15 years under Sensei Andrew Dickinson. He has attained his 4th Dan and runs his dojo, Arrow Martial Arts, with his wife Corinne who is also an NSJJ Black Belt. Rob’s life itself has been rich with challenges and adventures from a young age. After completing his HSC with academic excellence in his native Mauritius, he applied for and was awarded an Australian Government scholarship to complete his Bachelor Degree at Macquarie University in Sydney, where he moved to in 1994. Having to adapt fairly quickly to life in Australia, away from family and friends, with English as a second language, was one of Rob’s first challenges here. Thankfully, he and his wife Corinne supported each other over the years. They started training in Northstar Ju Jitsu around the same time, graded to their 1st Dan Black Belt the same year, and welcomed their son Cayden in 2011, only six weeks before opening Arrow Martial Arts, and two weeks before Rob’s 2nd Dan grading. Rob has always welcomed challenges and testing times as a way to extend himself – he seems to have made a way of life of biting more than he can chew, then chewing like there’s no tomorrow! Having to remodel how his dojo delivered classes online through Video On Demand and livestreaming during the 2020 COVID lockdown in Sydney was one of the ways he and Corinne applied adaptability to help their business survive. Having worked for over 20 years in delivering audiovisual services as part of his day job played an important part in this successful adaptation before physical lessons were allowed to resume in June 2020. He also credits the support of members of their tight-knit dojo community at Arrow, who have been supportive throughout this challenging year. This, he says, reminds him to be grateful, humbles him most profoundly and is testament to the hope he still has in humanity. In 2019, Rob competed in Florida, USA and brought home silver and bronze medals for Australia. He has also trained students to fight in other competitions in Australia and overseas, including in the SAW tournament in Japan and NSJJ championships locally. Rob derives great fulfilment from teaching and empowering students of all ages to go beyond their limits and find their true potential on and off the mats. Rob loves meeting and connecting with new people as part of his martial arts adventures. One thing he enjoys even more than sharing his own insights is listening to others’ rich stories of overcoming adversity and challenges and continuously improving their lives. Rob has supported Corinne in expanding Arrow Martial Arts’ offering to include Meditation and Yoga, which Corinne has trained and been accredited in. He cherishes the opportunity to grow his entrepreneurial spirit through building Arrow Martial Arts as a successful dojo. Like most other entrepreneurs, he considers every mistake as just another learning opportunity to improve and make better choices. While he stresses the importance of being able to think outside the square, he has also learned that, quite often, it is up to the business owner to draw the line on how far he or she is willing to compromise to meet customer expectations. Importantly, though, leaving students on a high as they exit the dojo after a gruelling lesson is of paramount importance, he says. Throughout it all, he’s learned that going the extra distance, such as an additional text message to follow up an enquiry, can make all the difference in business success by going further than the competition. Best investment? The house we live in.

Karate and security expert Scott Brown. One powerful guy.
One of Australia’s leading pioneers in Australian Karate, Scott Brown’s name is synonymous  with authentic Japanese Martial Arts. Scott spent many years training in Japan and through his hunger for knowledge in the dojo and in the tournament arena has remained an influencer to many people including myself. Scott has been one of the few martial artists that have taken their training and experience to the front line. As the owner of Strong Security, Scott has honed his fighting ability and now has an extensive knowledge on the reality of armed and un armed combat. I first met Scott at a competition in Sydney, His aura filled the room and to say that I was intimidated was an understatement. He was one powerful dude. But when I first spoke with him, he was gentle and eloquent. A true Budo warrior that walked with poise and his ego firmly in check. Over the years Scott and I have become close friends, sharing the journey into meditation whilst retaining the martial arts spirit. Today I am speaking with Scott whilst he looks over Sydney’s Darling Harbour in the first week of enforced quarantine after returning from teaching seminars around the world. For details on Scott's ESP Workshops please email andy@nsma.com.au.

The Stand Tall Podcast
Jimmy Choi. American Ninja Warrior.
My guest today is Jimmy Choi. He was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s disease, at 27. He became depressed. He gained weight. He needed a cane to walk. Then, he fell down the stairs with his three-year-old son in his arms. Enough was enough. Jimmy changed his life. Jimmy has participated in multiple clinical trials to further research for better treatments and hopefully a cure for PD. Physical therapy led him to running and other activities that help him physically and mentally. He joined Team Fox in 2012, and ran in his first marathon that year and he hasn't stopped since. In July 2017, he took on a new challenge and competed on NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior” to show the world that Parkinson’s will not stop him. Jimmy travels the country using his celebrity to inspire others with Parkinson’s disease to embrace physical fitness to manage their symptoms. He tells them to exercise with a purpose. He challenges them to try new types of exercises, things that scare them. He is living proof that exercise can transform the lives of people with Parkinson’s disease. Jimmy maintains a very active lifestyle, having competed in over 100 half marathons, 15 full marathons, one ultra-marathon, six Grand Fondo rides, multiple Spartan Races and countless 5K and 10K runs. To date, he has raised more than $450 000 for Parkinson's research with Team Fox... and counting. Email Jimmy for details on his live streamed classes. jimmy@thefoxninja.com

A chat with Clyde Campbell. Founder of the Shake it up Foundation.
I  first met Clyde more than 3 years ago. Soon after I was dx with Parkinson’s Clyde came over to my house and we sat together discussing what this new stage of life means. This is just the kind of man Clyde is. A positive beam of light for Parkinson’s people and their families. Clyde was diagnosed 10 years ago. He went straight to the most well know Parkinson’s person, MJ Fox and together with MJ Fox’s backing Clyde set up the Shake it up Foundation. What makes the shake it up foundation so unique is that 100% of all donations go towards slowing down, stopping and finding a cure. At present, the shake it up foundation is at the research cutting edge. Clyde is also an engineer in robotics. He has the uncanny ability to deconstruct problems and he has been able to apply his engineering background to the research of PD. https://shakeitup.org.au/clyde-campbell-australia-day-ambassador/

Interview with Rick Paulin
There are so many weird and wonderful people training in martial arts, My next guest is no exception , a third degree black belt in Northstar Ju Jitsu and is what I would call an intensely quirky genius that has a great skill of being able to analyse and break down just about anything to its base components, and re-build a better far more efficient model. Highly entertaining as an adults and kids martial arts trainer, able to lift unnatural weights of kettle bells, master of the Bulgarian bag, and is working on a cancer treatment that will revolutionise how cancer is treated.https://andydickinson.com.au/

Every now and then. People, over time achieve extraordinary results. May Lai's secret to success in martial arts is due to her consistent and focused effort, long term.  She is now the head trainer overseeing 100+ Black belts at Northstar Ju Jitsu. A great achievement as at the beginning of your journey, I really did not think that she had what it took. I was so wrong.
