Madame Hailley is giving a couple of lectures at a conference in New Orleans this week, but she "dispatched" a note with warnings about staying safe in the backwoods of Alabama while foraging for "roots and berries!"

These are all warnings that my Great Grandmother Lilla would have noted whenever she went beyond the garden to stock her "apothecary."

Naturally, there are the usual warnings about rattlesnakes, poisonous berries, sudden storms and such, but there's much more to worry about when you're out in those piney woods.

This is a reminder that in the deep South, the woods ain't nothing to play around with.
