St. John Chrysostom answers, “That which sufficed to redeem us was not sufficient for love.” St. Bernard: “He endured much weariness that He might bind man to love Him much.” Says our Savior Himself, “Greater love than this no man has - that a man laid down his life for his friends.” St. Bernard answers: “ but you Have a greater charity, Lord, and giving your life for your enemies!” “He showed His love for us, in that, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).”
