The 2009 Spring Concert, performed by the Flint Citadel Band Sunday, May 17, 2009 - 3:00pm wsg: Tom Hanton, Trombone & Euphonium Soloist from Eastern Michigan DHQ Index of Performance 00:00 Milestone.....................March ................William Himes Deputy Bandmaster Matthew Rowland begins our concert by conducting this march, which was written to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Chicago Staff Band and features the composer's original hymn tune, "Dearborn Street." 04:29 Ellacombe...............Congregational Song.........................William Himes 07:18 Sing A Happy Song......................................Terry Camsey This solo was written for, and at the request of, Andrew Justice, principal trombone soloist of the International Staff Band. Written in the 'big band' style of the 1940's it features two songs, "Sing a Happy Song," published in 1976 for songster brigades and "News for You," which was originally written for a contemporary youth vocal group. 11:11 Excelsior......................Dudley Bright This composition, which expresses the universality and joy of the Gospel, was written as the overture to the 1990 International Congress Youth Spectacular and arranged for the International Staff Band Centenary Celebration of 1991. Melodies include, "The World for God," "At Thy Feet I Bow Adoring," "Glory to His Name," and "Keep the Old Flag Flying." 18:24 Shalom......................Erik Silfverberg Deputy Bandmaster, Andrew Bell, conducts this arrangement of the Jewish folk song, "Hevenu Shalom Alechem," meaning, "With words of peace now we greet you." 21:07 An Offering......................William Himes Bandmaster William Himes performs this original piano composition during the free-will offering which was taken to support The Salvation Army's missionary efforts in Africa. Interestingly, this solo was composed only fifteen minutes before the beginning of the concert! 24:58 I'm Glad I'm A Salvation Soldier......................Noel Jones This sparkling variation solo, based on the Salvation Army chorus of the same name, was written especially for Karl Strand, Chicago Staff Band euphonium soloist, following the band's tour of Australia in 1991. 30:02 The Great Celebration......................Andrew Blyth Written for the British Territorial Youth Band in 2000, this Fanfare and Prelude features the contemporary Christian song, "Great is the Darkness." 33:19 Rolling Along......................March......................William Himes Written in tribute to the Flint Citadel Band on the occasion of their corps' centenary in 1993, this march features the tunes, "The Old Chariot," and "Rolling Along in Fiery Chariots." A discerning ear will detect subtle references to several General Motors advertising jingles as well as University of Michigan's fight song, "The Victors." 37:02 I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked......................Peter Graham This solo, written for Hollywood studio trombonist, Bill Broughton, premiered at the 99th Annual Festival of the New York Staff Band. The well-known words, "I walked today where Jesus walked," are portrayed with warmth and strength. 40:57 In Christ Alone......................Martin Cordner Stuart Townsend and Keith Getty's song has become very popular of the last few years and is presented here as a four-verse setting. 45:36 A Choral Benediction......................William Himes A vocal benediction written in 1986 for the Chicago Staff Band, by its bandmaster.
