A Novel Plus a Short Equals a FeatureIn 1989, when I was a Lecturer at Texas A&M University, I took a vacation over to Liverpool,
England. In the native port of the Beatles, I became consumed with creating a story concerning a fictional friendship between the Beatles and an American by the name of Al Moran. Al, who was loosely based upon myself, had accepted a teaching position at the Liverpool Art College, where one of his students was a rebellious young rocker by the name of Lennon. The beautiful Ginny Browne was the catalyst of the growing friendship between John and Al. My saga was my own personal dreamscape of what would have happened if I would have been a mentor of John, Paul and George back in the days before they became famous. It was a fusion of fantasy with fact to recreate a magical time in Liverpool in the early to middle Sixties. I would be part of their legend.
In 2022, PTP/Book Division, an imprint of Saguaro Books, Of Fountain Hills, Arizona finally
published my novel as Al and the Moon Dogs. Al being Al Moran and the Moon Dogs being an
early band name of the group that gradually evolved into the Fab Four. I had previously
published the book in 2013 under my own imprint of Celtic-Badger Publishers. I used the title
of Mersey Boys in honor of the Mersey River that flows through Liverpool. The Beatles and
other rock groups of the area had been a part of the Mersey Beat Sound. As a wandering
educator, I have taught in Japan, Saudia Arabia, Wisconsin and Texas, and as I rambled the world I was always working upon my Beatles’ yarn.
