244 - Humanizing The Remote Work Experience W/ Dr. Diane Lennard
In this episode of the Responsible Leadership Podcast, host Earl Breon interviews Dr. Diane Lennard, a professor of Management Communication at NYU Stern School of Business and a communication coach for executives, teams, educators, and professionals. They discuss the concept of responsible leadership and its importance in a remote work environment. Dr. Lennard states that responsible leadership is a process of interaction with shareholders that is focused on advancing shared goals inside and outside the organization based on values, principles, and ethics. Dr. Lennard also speaks about her book, Humanizing the Remote Experience Through Leadership and Coaching Strategies for Better Virtual Connections, which she co-authored with Dr. Amy Mednick. The conversation emphasizes the importance of responsible leadership and the need for shared values to build a strong team.
In this conversation, we about how to Diane developed her expertise in communication. She attributes her interest in communication to her childhood, family structure, and her professional experience in the performing arts since the age of six. Over time, her love for education, business, and theater all came together to form the expertise in communication that she has today.
The book was written with the pandemic in mind, as the pair had to transition to virtual coaching and teaching due to the pandemic. They sought to understand the brain research behind why people feel so tired after a day of Zoom calls and why it's so different to be in a little digital box. Their book covers how to lead and coach in the remote environment, something a lot of people struggled with early on. They discussed how Google Meet and other virtual platforms were just starting to catch on as organizations transitioned to remote work.
