Surviving a Spill: A biking lesson about Resilience

Life can be a slippery slope and when you fall, because we all do from time to time, you can either lay there or get back up. I hope you choose to stand tall with me! Literally one of my favorite parts of our trip was renting bikes and riding around the resort. This was the perfect option for me as I try to be as efficient as possible and last time we were there my leg with the rod hurt terribly bad from 15k+/day walking. #rentthebikes There was this beautiful curvy pathway at the edge of the property where you could really pick up speed and let the warm ocean air blow through you. It was magnificent, until it wasn't...

The bikes had to be returned by 4:40 and we were taking one last lap before getting ready for our farewell beach party. Jesse was jacked up on espresso shots (see previous post ) hitting speed bumps as if they were jumps and way far ahead of me. I always try and keep up with my guys and picked up speed on that last stretch. The sprinklers had recently turned off which was evident by the large pool of water on the pavement. It was 85 degrees so naturally I wanted the refreshing water to splash on me as it had on many other rides that week. I went right through the puddle and as I turned left...

I friggin' fell. Again!

I was so angry with myself and the sprinklers and couldn't figure out why my apple watch was pinging an emergency sos because "It looks like you took a hard fall". You're darn right I did. The worker was next to me asking if I needed a medic before I could even figure out what had actually happened. One of my worst fears is having to go to the hospital in a foreign country. My Stanley had flown off the handle bars and spilled my ice water all over the pavement. I picked up my hat and regained my composure, slightly grateful that he was the only one that witnessed it. My adrenaline was at 110, my knee was building fluid and my shoulder didn't feel right. Son of a...

I wanted to cry but was more filled with rage than anything. I hopped back on the back and pedaled towards Jesse who asked "where'd you go?" "I freakin' fell!", which he was certainly confused as to why I went through the water on pavement. #lessonlearned

Fortunately I have a high pain tolerance and was able to make it to the party AND was well enough to not have to go to the hospital. The nurse at the ortho center said, "let's see how broken you are" and I couldn't feel seen any more than that, lol. I'm grateful there aren't any broken bones and that the "rod and screws are still all intact" in my leg. Oh good. As far as my shoulder, I'll know more after an MRI and am hoping for no partial or full tears. I started at home recovery workouts to keep myself mobile and avoid any long term damage. If you have rotator cuff injury tips and tricks, please do share them! Oh and good vibes/prayers, send those too because this better not be as long and drawn out as my open fracture.
