The Rebel Work Podcast
Fiona Ross: Empowering Masculinity in a Feminist World
In this exciting first episode of season 3, Sophie has a heartfelt conversation with Fiona Ross, an esteemed coach who specialises in empowering men to find balance, wholeness, and integrity in their lives.

Sophie and Fiona delve into a thought-provoking discussion about the role of men in the midst of the rise of feminism. While feminism has brought about significant positive changes for women, it's important to acknowledge that men should not be excluded from the conversation.

This episode explores the necessity of embracing both masculine and feminine energies in the world, understanding that true harmony and progress can only be achieved when men and women blend their unique strengths and work together as allies.

Drawing inspiration from the concept of yin and yang, Sophie and Fiona explore the idea that achieving a sense of equity between genders is more significant than simply pursuing equality. They challenge the notion of a victim society and discuss the unfortunate reality that men often feel apprehensive about being alone with women, fearing false accusations and potential harm to their reputations. It's crucial to create an environment that fosters trust, understanding, and respect between both genders.

This episode sheds light on the struggles faced by men in our modern society. Fiona shares her observations from working with male clients, who often find themselves sacrificing their own well-being, attempting to shoulder all responsibilities, and ultimately burning out. Shocking statistics on male suicide highlight the urgency of addressing these issues and creating a supportive and peaceful world for men.

The conversation delves into the concept of mansplaining, examining instances where women unintentionally emasculate men whilst also tackling the idea of toxic masculinity and the importance of holding space for men's vulnerability. Society has conditioned men to suppress their emotions, leading to a fear of judgment and ridicule for displaying any form of sensitivity or fear. It's time to redefine masculinity and create an inclusive culture that allows men to embrace their emotions fully.

Additionally, this episode explores the significance of male camaraderie and the impact of the closure of traditional gathering places, such as pubs, on men's mental well-being. Men need spaces where they can connect with other men, build friendships, and share their experiences without judgment. The demands placed on men and the lack of emphasis on self-care have resulted in many neglecting their own needs, leading to burnout and dissatisfaction.

Join us on this eye-opening journey as we shed light on the importance of embracing men's unique qualities, supporting their well-being, and creating a world where both men and women can thrive together. It's time to break free from societal expectations and foster an environment that encourages authenticity, vulnerability, and collaboration.

Sophie On: Loneliness in Leadership
In this special mini-episode, (the Sophie Solo I like to call them), I dive into some personal stories of mine all around loneliness.

This is a topic that I find people rarely talk about from a career perspective, but more from a personal perspective, but this was something that came about when I was thinking back on my own career path.

Having been in a corporate leadership role from a young age, I wanted to share my experiences in this, and also now years later as I run my own business, the loneliness still resides.

HR can also really keep you in a silo, due to the nature of the job and knowing highly sensitive information, makes for a very lonely experience. Where does HR go, when they are the leaning pillar for the company?

As a business owner now, I try to surround myself with vibrant people who can help me learn, grow and have a good time too. But as an entrepreneur, you need to actively seek out this as you don’t have colleagues you can fall back on.

If you are feeling this, know you are not alone and things do get better. Harness the power of your loneliness, lean on those around you and find your tribe!

The Rebel Work Podcast
Libby Vincent: Beyond Our Gender, Conversations on Feminism, Authentic Leadership, and the Importance of Being Yourself
Sophie and Libby delve into the topics of feminism and International Women's Day. They explore the different ways in which women are perceived in the workplace and the wider world.

Sophie shares her personal journey as a young leader at the age of 25 and the challenges she faced in leadership roles not only as a woman but as a young leader. They discuss how certain leadership styles can lack authenticity and limit your potential to add value and emphasize the importance of being able to shine as yourself rather than simply fulfilling a role description.

Sophie and Libby also touch on the issue of pinkwashing and how it tends to occur on International Women's Day. They also debate the leadership styles of agentic and communal leadership – directive and authoritative – and how to find the balance between them. They stress the importance of looking at how people lead rather than letting their gender define their leadership style.

Moreover, they address the misconception of gender and how women and men are perceived differently, and highlight the problems within feminism. They explain that it's not about the gender you present as, but rather about the expectations attached to that gender that can prevent you from delivering your full potential. Lastly, Sophie debates with Libby about the case for men and how it's important to talk about men's issues and problems equally as women.

The Rebel Work Podcast
Scott Walker: Empathy, Sympathy & Compassion - Lessons from a Hostage Negotiator
In this episode, Sophie sits down with former police hostage negotiator Scott Walker to talk about the art of negotiation. Scott has a new book coming out called "The Order of Chaos," which Sophie describes as a user's manual and ethos for negotiating and communicating effectively in daily business and personal life. Drawing on his real-life experiences in hostage negotiation, Scott provides many tools and strategies for negotiation, which he discusses further in the podcast.

The conversation kicks off with a discussion on mindset and how having the right mindset sets the tone for negotiation. Scott emphasizes the importance of clear, objective, and rational thinking in all communication. Managing your state of mind is crucial to articulating yourself appropriately in any given situation.

Building trust is also a key element of successful negotiation, and understanding the needs of the person you're negotiating with is essential. Sophie and Scott go on to define sympathy, empathy, and compassion. Scott breaks down empathy into emotional and cognitive empathy and explains how the two lead towards compassion. He argues that being sympathetic is not effective in negotiation.

Lastly, they delve into the impact of teams within an organization, particularly the need for a red team. A red team helps identify potential dangers and "what ifs." For a red team to be effective, an organization must fully commit to hearing what they have to say and taking appropriate action in response.

Overall, this episode provides valuable insights into negotiation and communication, drawn from Scott's wealth of experience as a hostage negotiator. So, whether you're negotiating in business or in your personal life, this podcast is a must-listen.

The Rebel Work Podcast
Christopher Walker: Work and life with connections, positivity and meaning. A life worth living.
In this episode, Sophie is joined by Christopher Walker who has similarly moved away from his corporate career into one of training and coaching incorporating the use of positive psychology in the workplaces he engages with.

Positive psychology, according to Christopher Peterson, is the scientific study of what makes life most worth living – it explores character strengths, optimism, happiness, wellbeing, and compassion. Christopher strives to make it his mission to dispel the myth that happiness in work is pink and fluffy. He argues it is more about flourishing on multiple levels such as a personal, cultural, relational, biological and global level.

Sophie and Christopher discuss why positive psychology is so important in workplaces today and how an uncertain climate and a volatile landscape have led to a need for all organisations needing a Chief Happiness Officer or Strategic Positive Psychologist– a skilled person in understanding organisation challenges and who can drive effective leadership.

This podcast discusses many staggering facts about how unhappy people are feeling in their work right now - and all over the world. One powerful thing Christopher suggests we can do is to encourage people to build positive connections. He explores how we should invest in strategies that bring people together. As human beings, we crave meaningful connections which create oxytocin, and gives us a sense of bonding and increase our sense of belonging.

This all combines to improve the mental health and well-being of everyone. If we offer people a range of opportunities to connect and support people to engage in work that utilises their strengths, people then report feeling more engaged and energised.

The Rebel Work Podcast
Sophie On: Purpose, Rituals and Connection
In this short solo session, Sophie discusses three concepts that we all need to consider as we progress into a new year; purpose, rituals and connection.

Sophie shares the idea of purpose and questions whether the organisations we work with are sharing our individual sense of purpose - and what happens when they don’t. This makes it incredibly hard to uphold the values of the organisation we work with and also does not allow us to be our true authentic selves.

Sophie then talks about the importance of rituals in our everyday lives and how they prime us for the things we are to face throughout the day. We are continually immersed in rituals without even knowing, for example rituals of induction to a workplace or switching off rituals at the end of the day, and these sometimes small and simple actions allow us to connect with our experiences. Sophie shares some of her past and current rituals that have helped her throughout her work and home life.

Finally, combining purpose and rituals, Sophie examines the connection in our lives. How lacking authenticity and not allowing us to behave as our true self makes it difficult to build connections with others. Sophie describes a recent music concert she attended, along with seventy-six thousand others, and describes the sense of connection with the thousands who were present and unified at that moment.

The Rebel Work Podcast
Gabriella Braun: Bringing yourself work. The good, the bad and (more importantly) the ugly.
In this session, Sophie discusses psychoanalysis in the workplace with Director, Consultant and Author, Gabriella Braun. Sophie and Gabriella go into detail about Gabriella’s book ‘All That We Are,’ which looks at applying psychoanalytical thinking to understand the workplace and human behaviour.

Gabriella discusses how people need to embrace themselves for all that they are; the good, and bad as this encompasses all our personal experiences and makes us who we are. We shouldn’t leave our personalities, history or trauma at the door – it makes us who we are and argues we should allow the richness of who we are to come to play in the workplace.

Sophie and Gabriella explore how we all have an opposing pull of violence, aggression and hatred which is suppressed in our unconscious. Therefore, we never accept all of ourselves - who we truly are. It is important to recognise the side of us that we don’t necessarily want to.

One topic of the podcast is the sense of belonging in the workplace. Gabriella suggests that love is needed in the workplace to bring a sense of commitment and a genuine compassion of how others are actually feeling and spaces need to be created which allow people to be human.

The podcast concludes with the theme of speaking the unspeakable – raising those uncomfortable truths that need to be aired and Gabriella discusses some examples from her book. We all have pre-occupations before we get into the workspace, and by airing some of these, it allows people to breathe, relax and embrace themselves, their full selves, in the workplace.

Benedict Beaumont: The Physical and Mental Power of Breath
In this episode, Sophie discusses the power of breath with Benedict Beaumont. Ben is a breathwork facilitator who discusses in depth the benefits of breathing correctly and the power of breathing for connecting with yourself, and with other people.

Ben shares his techniques to improve your life both physically and mentally and this episode features two techniques that you can follow along to and feel the instant benefits. Ben believes that the power of breathwork, when harnessed properly, can transform every part of your life, including at work.

Sophie and Ben talk about the value of breath awareness, and the questions to get you started on your own breath journey: when am I breathing too fast or slow, where is the breath, is it shallow and in the upper chest? When we understand how we breathe in different situations we can improve our overall well-being.

Sophie on: Wellness in the Workplace, the Ritual of Winding Your Body Down
When we think about wellness at work, we automatically think about mental health, but in this mini-episode, Sophie dives into the physical side of wellness at work. As a certified yoga teacher and practitioner, Sophie talks about the strains that our bodies go through while at work, and how just aligning our posture and sitting correcting can have a huge impact on our well-being.

Sophie talks about rituals of winding our bodies down after work, getting ourselves prepared to relax, do exercise or cook dinner. All the things our bodies need to do after a full day's work. Sophie explains some of the things we can do to prepare ourselves for these so we can do it safely and set ourselves up the next day.

Nutrition is also a key factor of wellness within the workplace, as our bodies get tired and more slouched, we often find ourselves reaching for the fizzy drinks, or chocolate bars to help get us through those 2 pm slumps. Sophie discusses how culturally there needs to be more education on the fuel that our bodies really need to get us through the day.

Abla Filali Meknassi: Chief Happiness Officer Talks Happiness at Work
In this episode, Sophie discusses happiness in the workplace with Global Culture Leader, Abla Filali Meknassi. Abla describes how we can create working environments and work experiences for organisations where employees can feel psychologically safe, be their true authentic selves, and bloom. Work should be a place that you can go to for joy. Sophie and Abla explain how happiness in the workplace is not pink and fluffy but something where people can grow and thrive, and should be taken seriously.

Sophie and Abla dive into the topic of diversity within the workplace and the need to create inclusive working environments to empower individuals. Recognising biases and also recognising how people feel empowered is different culturally.

Finally, the podcast talks about the strengths of individuals within an organisation and how playing people to their strengths leads to a happier workforce and decreases the number of actively disengaged people from their work.

Laurence McCahill: Competitors or Collaborators?
In this episode, Sophie discusses how to do business differently with Laurence McCahill. Laurence is co-founder of the Happy Start Up with Dr Carlos Saba and in this podcast, he discusses the three values of his company; friendship, learning and play and how we should not see other businesses as competitors but as potential collaborators and ‘play’ together. Laurence discusses the traditional view of business, the media’s view of business and entrepreneurship and how damaging this is for potential entrepreneurs and businesses.

Sophie and Laurence also discuss how the endless growth model of business is unsustainable and how Laurence is trying to encourage others to change by some interesting events such as ‘The Week of Nothing’ which Sophie attended.

Finally, Sophie and Laurence get to the topic of rituals in business and how Laurence uses these inherently spiritual practices in his camps to ground people within a shared space and have a lasting and leading effect of the individuals who take part.

Sophie and Liz discuss self-managing organisations and the impact they could potentially have in a lot of organisations across the world.

This episode goes into detail about the structure of businesses and examine how businesses are the last place where democracy has yet to set in and should look to employ a more transparent workplace where pay is also transparent from company accounts to individuals’ income.

Joanna Rawbone: The Extroversion Bias - an Introvert & an Extrovert discuss…
In this episode, Sophie discusses introversion by ‘introvert advocate’ Joanna Rawbone. Joanna describes herself as a ‘change agent’ – a person who helps you get clarity on and make changes that are desired or required depending on the situation and also a ‘cage rattler’ – have a listen to find out why!

Introverts work on a system of think, say, think rather than an extrovert’s process of say, think say and Joanna describes how the quality, not quantity, of input is important and why many introverts get overlooked.

Sophie and Joanna discuss how the shift online has both benefitted and impeded an introvert’s working pattern and how certain technological features, like breakout rooms in meetings, can be a daunting prospect for more introverted people who can feel less psychologically safe in the workspace as a result.
