In this first episode of the podcast, Ilya interviews Jonathan Gan-Mor, a speaker of The Venus Project which offers a new way of thinking about our entire system, starting from the economy. Together with Ilya in the studio and online are five listeners who react and ask questions. They discuss planned obsolescence, motivations behind human behavior, the current economic system, and more.
Jonathan and Ilya delve into planned obsolescence - what happens when products are intentionally designed with shorter lifespans, contributing to waste and resource depletion. Intentional waste of resources of all sorts is inherent to our economic system, as otherwise making economic profit would be impossible.
The discussion questions the current economic system's reliance on profit and scarcity. While the podcast does not offer a clear way to a different economy, it encourages us to ask the question: How an economy in which we don´t need to destroy or waste things to keep things scarce can be made possible? An economy with provide everyone with their basic needs and even more.
