Arboviruses Pt1: Yellow Fever, Chikungunya, and Dengue Fever

Hey Poison Friends! We are just starting to feel the slightest edges of Fall/Autumn here. It is more like “false Fall” as we call it, because the temps here will hit the 90s again before it actually gets cooler. I mention this, in part, because I love fall and spooky season and because I am looking forward to the demise of critters like mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes are famously known as the deadliest critter on our planet, simply because of the deadly diseases they spread. We will mainly being talking about Aedes aegypti (Egyptian Mosquito) and the Aedes albopictus (Asian Tiger Mosquito) this episode because they are the common spreaders of the three diseases we are discussing today: Yellow Fever, Chikungunya, and Dengue Fever.

I want to look at the histories and track records of these diseases and how they affected humanity throughout. Yellow Fever, for instance, was a much feared illness between the 1600s-1900s, with grotesque symptoms and relatively high death rate. Chikungunya, while having a lower death rate, has caused great pain and disability. Dengue Fever is not just historic, but making a come back. It is also called “bonebreak fever” and for good reason.
