When Lauren ran into complications with her medical she realized why some aviators are not disclosing medical issues with the FAA and/or have healthcare avoidance. Her two years in the special issuance process and the tragic passing of UND student pilot, John Hauser, inspired her to take a closer look at the issue; specifically at aviation students. Soon followed her work, Flying Under the Radar: A Survey of Collegiate Pilots’ Mental Health to Identify Aeromedical Nondisclosure and Healthcare-Seeking Behaviors.
