Richard is an alumnus of San Jose State University, with a master’s degree in microbiology. His studies also emphasized molecular biology and biochemistry. Several years after earning his MA, he obtained a Clinical Laboratory Bioanalyst license. In subsequent years he worked in various administrative and technical management roles in laboratory settings, beginning his first assignment as a clinical laboratory director in 1993. In 2006 he began working in a reference laboratory for Quest Diagnostics; he continued working in various Quest laboratories as a laboratory administrative director and technical director. Shortly before the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, he began to further explore research areas that had caught his attention during his studies and employment years. As a result of his research, new information came to light that sparked his enthusiasm. And as the pandemic engulfed the world, research and writing of this book filled the voids left by the relative isolation.

Khalil Rushdan is the Organizing Director for the ACLU of Arizona. Khalil served 15 years before his conviction for Felony Murder was overturned for vindictive prosecution. Since his exoneration, Khalil has been an advocate and a mentor for formerly incarcerated Arizonans. While previously serving as the Community Partnerships Coordinator for the organization, Rushdan worked with community groups with a special emphasis on organizations that work directly with those directly impacted by the criminal justice system and communities traditionally not involved in criminal justice work. As Organizing Director, Rushdan oversees the organizing components of the ACLU of Arizona's criminal justice reform and education equity campaigns. pro-active multi-year advocacy campaigns to reduce the Arizona prison population and keep kids in school by limiting school suspensions and expulsions. In addition to leading both of those pro-active campaigns, Rushdan is responsible for developing organizing strategies around other priority issues such as immigrants’ rights and LGBTQ equality.
