Remembering Fola Francis: A Personal Look at Nigeria's Trans Icon

In this SPECIAL episode of The Outsiders, we honour the life and legacy of Fola Francis, a Nigerian transgender trailblazer who tragically passed away in December 2023.

She was featured in our series exploring how LGBTQ+ Nigerians access healthcare, where she shared the peculiar challenges trans people in the country face.

Todah Opeyemi spoke to two of Fola's loved ones: Frank, a close friend, and Liber, her chosen daughter. Together, they paint a vivid portrait of the woman who was at the heart of Lagos' burgeoning ballroom scene and the first trans woman to walk the Lagos Fashion Week runway.

Through their stories, you'll learn not only about the impact Fola had on the LGBTQ+ community in Nigeria but also the qualities that made her so dear to so many.
