THE DIDACHE is an anonymous early Christian text, also called the "Teaching of the Twelve Apostles," that provides instruction on Christian life, ethics, and community organization. Likely written in the first or second century AD, it includes guidelines on the "two ways" of life and death, liturgical practices like baptism and the Eucharist, and the roles of church leaders. It was widely influential in early Christianity but was never included in the New Testament canon.
Content: The text is structured into several sections:
Ethical instruction, primarily through the "Two Ways" of life and death.
Liturgical instruction on practices such as baptism, fasting, and the Eucharist.
Guidance on Christian teachers, prophets, bishops, and deacons.
Instructions for communal life.
A section about the end times.
Purpose: The Didache served as an early church manual or "church order" to help Christian communities navigate their faith and practices during a formative period.
Historical context:
The text was rediscovered in 1873 by Philotheos Bryennios, a Greek Orthodox bishop, though it had been known and referenced in earlier centuries.
While influential, it was ultimately not accepted as canonical scripture.
