THE NICENE CREED is a foundational Christian statement of faith that outlines core beliefs about God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, particularly emphasizing the doctrine of the Trinity. Developed in the 4th century by the Council of Nicaea (325 AD) and revised by the Council of Constantinople (381 AD), it was created to oppose heresies like Arianism that denied the full divinity of Jesus.
Trinity: It affirms belief in one God who exists as three co-equal persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit.
Divinity of Jesus: It asserts that Jesus is "God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God," fully divine and "of one Being with the Father".
Incarnation: It details Jesus's life, including his birth from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, his crucifixion, death, resurrection, and ascension.
Holy Spirit: It describes the Holy Spirit as "the Lord, the giver of life," and states that the Spirit is worshipped and glorified along with the Father and the Son.
Church and Salvation: The creed also includes beliefs in one holy, catholic and apostolic Church, one baptism for the remission of sins, and the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.
