It wasn't too long ago that I came across Felipe and his project Nrthrn. From the get-go I was enthralled with is aesthetic. It's clean and full of contrast but doesn't distract from his music. This episode we dive into some of his best practices for consistently producing quality content on social media effectively, how to be a musician while working a day job, and balancing the business side of things while still maintaining focus on the art.

Mike and I frequently crossed paths over the years, always narrowly missing each other. From our days touring and playing with Intervals to The Haarp Machine and now Ever Forthright, Mike stands out as one of the most gifted rock and metal vocalists in today's music scene. During our conversation, we touch on being multifaceted, our humble beginnings, the early demo recordings, and the challenges our patient parents had to endure. It's been years since Auras and Ever Forthright went on tour together and boy was that an experience. We invited Josh Ligaya from Auras to give us some insight into his blueprint for releasing music, how to promote it, and how the series ALONE can serve as a lesson to musicians everywhere. I'm a big fan of Shayan Javadi. We had an awesome convo about what moves us to write and play guitar/music. Why do we write? What inspires us? What do our songs mean? Does everything even need meaning? I highly suggest giving her a follow (links below) and giving this chat a listen. Also: Pink guitars are cool. Being yourself. Setting deadlines and learning to cut yourself off. Being a perfectionist. Who are you making music for? Others? Yourself? Tapping into emotions and really giving your music meaning. I've been a Moon Tooth and Nick Lee fan for over a decade. I used to bounce around dumpy apartments in NYC and the highlight of my life was going to see them play from time to time. We're all native Long Islanders and I even went to school with one of the guys. It's really been awesome watching them grow over the years. Seeing Nick play in particular has always been inspiring. I watch him and often think, "this is exactly what this guy should be doing", and it has made me strive for something similar in my playing and relationship with music. We talk about booking shows, the pros/cons of social media, how prog has infiltrated the metal scene, and a personal favorite of mine: not comparing yourself to others. Follow!

Aaron and I (and Ever Forthright) go back over a decade and it's been amazing to watch Aaron and Intervals grow over this last decade since the days of our first few shows together. We catch up and talk about how the game has changed for prog and guitar-centric music including marketing, social media, the audience, the goals, the challenges. This is a long one but packed with lots of good info and stories. Enjoy!

It was really an honor meeting and chatting with Paul in this episode. I've been a long time Cynic and Death fan so this was a real treat for me. We get into all sorts of stuff: playing live, managing emotions, approaches to practice and writing, our love for Ben Monder, where we got started with music.... all sorts of stuff! In this lesson I talk about applying the diminished scale in a not-so-subtle way. See the previous week's post on the inverse of this, applying the diminished scale in a 'subtle' way.
The 'not-so-subtle' approach picks out the major and minor triads that exist in an 8 note diminished scale and really leans on them. There are many ways that this can be applied, but here I talk about applying it directly on a minor chord - not implying some external harmony or what have you, but rather using a diminished scale that already has a lot in common with the diatonic minor tonality, and seeing what we can get out of that.

I spend some time going into detail on a concept I'm calling 'subtle diminished'. Take a look/listen and you'll see why. I also apply this concept in a less jazzy setting here: https://www.instagram.com/reel/Ci5PCZLjFWb/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
