What’s the importance of the hymen?I’m sure this will be the first of many episodes on this podcast that tackles this issue, because quite frankly, we need to keep discussing this issue until it no longer is an issue. Today I sat down with part two of the Mother Being team, Fayrouz Ibrahim to talk about the history of virginity in the world and why our Middle Eastern culture is so obsessed with the hymen and virginity.Honor killings exist in Egypt and beyond, which stem from ignorance, the patriarchy and violence and hatred against women.We’re diving deep and busting big myths and questions: Why the hymen is actually not an indication of virginity and that (oh by the way) not every woman will bleed during first time sex and why we need to finally shift our understanding of this.A woman’s worth cannot be reduced to her virginity or a tiny thin membrane in her vagina.Fayrouz completed her undergraduate studies in Anthropology, specifically from a cultural and social standpoint. She is extremely passionate about womanhood, gender theory and dynamics, post-colonial and intersectional feminism.  Fayrouz has done fieldwork on motherhood in conflict zones, gender dynamics in public transportation, postcolonial structures in Egypt, and music as a method of resistance.
