The Game of Survivor and Mental Health: an Interview with Janet Carbin
Hi Mind Grind Fam!
In this episode, Dana and Beth spice it up a bit by interviewing a contestant from Survivor who made an impact as a genuine person taking a stand, especially after controversial episodes on Season 39. In 2019, Janet Carbin, an almost 60-something year old woman from New Jersey, went onto the physically and socially competitive show Survivor for her chance at winning money for her family. What she didn't expect was being put in a situation where others would confide in her about concerns of sexual harassment on the show, and all the ramifications of her following the moral decision to protect these girls. She experienced excommunication from the rest of the group for trying to take a stand for something that she believed in and assertively addressed others who were making a story against her for their gain.
This is an episode full of hot tea about what it's like to be on the show, the behind the scene footage you wouldn't get from being a viewer, and the very special role therapy has played in Janet's life. We speak on the mental toll going on a show like Survivor has on one's life, the impact sexual assault and harassment has on a person, her personal desire to advocate for those who have lost their voice, and the value of listening to one's gut. Whether you're a Survivor fan or not, you're sure to be a Janet fan. We highly recommend hearing her seeds of wisdom earned through years of growing as a person in and outside the therapy room.
