The fact is, Natural Wines are not something I know a great deal about, and nor do many of the podcast cohorts that I usually drink and record with. We needed an expert. Luckily, Friend of the Podcast and occasional guest Elizabeth Krecker knew just the man for the job.
Meet Timo Geis, the owner of Selection Sauvage. Selection Sauvage is a wine import company that focuses on select producers of natural wines across the world, focusing on filling the Arizona market for these vintages. Living in Sedona, Timo was a great fit for us to talk to about the topic, and his encyclopedic knowledge of the Natural Wine world helped me and Elizabeth to make sense of the topic. Timo is also a student at Yavapai College, where he's hoping to translate his knowledge of Natural Wines to make some of Arizona's first examples; one of which we drink in this podcast!

Okay, I admit, this episode is sort of a cheat episode. No grape in any of the bottles we drank in this episode was grown in the United States; unfortunately, there is very little Nebbiolo to be found growing here, save for small patches in California, New Mexico, Arizona, and Washington. (Had I been thinking, I would have run down the street to Caduceus and grabbed a bottle of their Naugal del Paciencia. Whoops.)
But the fact of the matter is that Nebbiolo is a grape of legend and, really, we couldn't go without talking about it. That, and I had wanted to crack open one of my Apocalypse Barolo bottles for several months at the time of this recording. What better way to drink it than in association with some of its potentially noble brethren?
In the New World, while California has produced some stars with this grape from the fog-shrouded heights of the Piedmont of Italy, it has been Baja California that has stolen the show. L.A. Cetto is probably the most famous producer of this grape, or at least, the most accessible to find here in the United States.

Cetto, alongside a 2009 Barolo from Pietro Rinaldi, comparing both to The Godfather, a Non-Vintage Nebbiolo made from grapes or juice imported from the Piedmont from Water's Edge Winery in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
