The title comes from a Welsh ballad know as 'Y Ferch o'r Sger' although the content of the ballad bears little relation to the plot of the novel. The novel was seralised in Blackwood's Magazine (Edinburgh) from August 1871 to July 1872 before being published as a three volume novel.
