In our conversation with Mariama Jorbateh, CEO of Fantanka Organization, we delve into how we can best support victims of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in the Gambia. We explore the prevalence of SGBV and its impact on society, emphasizing the need for a multifaceted approach to reparations. Crucially, creating a safe space for SGBV victims to heal is essential, and Mariama provides valuable insights on building trust and comfort. We also address the challenges that victims face, including a lack of DNA evidence and the necessity for psychosocial and economic assistance. Finally, we examine possible forms of reparations, such as monetary compensation, rehabilitation, and government support.
