24. Inclusion Recipe - Safe but Brave - Sitting with Dr. Doyin Atewologun
I sit down with my friend Dr Doyin Atewologun who is Dean of the Rhodes Scholarships at the Rhodes Trust. A Chartered Organisational Psychologist by training, Doyin is an internationally-recognised expert on leadership, diversity, intersectionality and organisation culture. She is also Academic Adviser for the UK government-backed Parker Review on ethnic diversity on FTSE 350 boards as commissioned by the then-UK Secretary of State for Business. Doyin was recognised in People Management magazine's Top 20 Diversity and Inclusion ‘Power List’ for 2020. She won Inspiring Board Leader of the Year award at the Precious Awards in 2019, and has won numerous other awards for excellence in academic publications. Doyin has extensive experience in coaching, executive education, programme design and research advising, and she has worked with many of the FTSE 100, United Nations agencies, legal and other professional services firms, and the UK Civil Service for over 15 years. Doyin is tasked with ensuring parity in and excellence across all dimensions of the experience for Scholars in residence, and she looks forward to advancing efforts for greater equity and inclusion at Oxford University and the Rhodes Trust. We were part of the British Psychological Society Diversity & Inclusion group a long time ago. This is a deep conversation about inclusion and what it means for both of us. The recipe she shares is: Inclusion Recipe - Safe but brave  Ingredients- Courage, curiosity, empathy, time and a learning mindset. We talk about: - Taking advantage of the different strands people are bringing. - We should be more afraid if we didn’t do anything. - Inclusion is about both sameness and difference. Recognising someone is different and unique and just like you in their common-humanity. - I would love a board where everyone looks around and asks what do we need to do in order to diversify our space and then how to make people feel more comfortable.
