Jimmy discusses the power of literature in public and private life with Sterling Professor of English David Bromwich. Professor Bromwich has taught at Yale for more than 35 years, leading courses on Shakespeare, Melville, eighteenth-century prose, and English poetry, as well as teaching in the Directed Studies Program. He is the author of 10 books, and his writing has appeared in a wide range of literary journals and popular political blogs. Jimmy and Professor Bromwich discuss how literature can change our understanding of ourselves and our politics; the importance of academic freedom and having uncomfortable conversations; and how to engage with literature outside an academic environment.
