The Invisible Weight
Ep 1: Pregnant Americans are Feeling Dark Emotions

Trigger warning: This audio documentary contains uncensored language and raw content, presented in the context of real-life stories including topics such as miscarriage and suicide.

Americans are feeling things in pregnancy that aren’t making it into the weekly newsletter from The Bump. In this chapter of The Invisible Weight, Lindsey Wehking and guests reveal the often untold stories behind being pregnant in America, including feelings society rarely talks about. This is the Invisible Weight that many feel like they are carrying alone.

Featuring Evelyn Gama (clinical social worker at Motherhood Institute New York) and Katie Hurley (clinical social worker) along with the firsthand experiences of research respondents who were brave enough to share.

The Invisible Weight is hosted by Lindsey Wehking and is a production of Nonfiction Research, commissioned by Twill.

Ep 2: The US Healthcare System Fails to Provide Emotional Care for Pregnancy

Trigger warning: This audio documentary contains uncensored language and raw content, presented in the context of real-life stories including topics such as miscarriage and suicide.

Despite the fact that many pregnant Americans are having emotional experiences that deserve care, the healthcare system is doing very little to acknowledge or support the Invisible Weight. Chapter 2 of The Invisible Weight takes a cold, hard look at the systemic barriers throughout the US healthcare experience, including perspectives of those on Medicaid, and makes a case for more emotional care.

Featuring Sabia Wade (founder of For The Village, a non-profit doula service for low income and marginalized communities) and Wendy Cruz-Chan (certified doula, birth worker, and child educator), along with the firsthand experiences of research respondents who were brave enough to share. Special thanks to “M,” who shared her experience with us.

Ep 3: Why is the Ob-Gyn Relationship Falling Short?

Trigger warning: This audio documentary contains uncensored language and raw content, presented in the context of real-life stories including topics such as miscarriage and suicide.

Caught in a cascade of systemic pressures, OB/GYNs lack the time and infrastructure needed to provide compassionate emotional care, even though most want to be able to provide this kind of support to their patients. In this chapter, Lindsey exposes gaps in the US healthcare system and how the system fails pregnant Americans.

Featuring Dr. Nazanin Silver (former OB/GYN, current gynecologic psychiatrist) and Catherine Monk (clinical psychologist and director of Women’s Mental Health @OB/GYN at Columbia University), along with the firsthand experiences of research respondents who were brave enough to share.

The Invisible Weight is hosted by Lindsey Wehking and is a production of Nonfiction Research, commissioned by Twill.
