Career FAQs
  1. Should I have a cover letter?
If it’s not required, you don’t need it! If you have a templated cover letter that you send to everyone, don’t mess with it. “When I got a cover letter sent to me at Nestle Purina, I never looked at it.” - Matt
The cover letter usually doesn’t provide the information a recruiter needs to move you along in the hiring process. "The email you send with your resume could be a brief form of the cover letter.” - Dan
  2. Should I include extracurricular & volunteer experience on my resume?
YES! It’s good to add those industry specific activities, especially as a recent graduate. Some people also like to hire athletes. Showing leadership roles you have been a part of shows initiative, drive, and many other skills a company might be looking for.
  3. Can I ask questions in an interview? What kind of questions can I ask?
Don’t ask “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” Don’t immediately ask about PTO and benefits.
Show interest in the company and position: “What is the top thing that would set me up for success in this role?” “What are the next steps in the hiring process?”
  4. Should I connect with the HR representative on LinkedIn before your interview?
Do it! You have nothing to lose to connect with those people. It can only help. Plus, it shows initiative.
  5. Can I take notes in an interview?
Absolutely! It helps give you time to think about the questions being asked. This is a good way to draft a follow-up thank you letter. You should always send your follow-up in at least 24 hours!
  6. How can I stand out in the hiring process?
Do everything to the best of your ability! Listen to our separate episodes on Interview Prep, LinkedIn, and Resume Writing. If you follow each of these, you will be sure to land the job in any industry!
