A Day Out! - Homestead Miami Racetrack

Ever dreamt of taking a luxury performance car for a spin? How about on a professional racetrack?
My Guest today did just that. His name is Nick Mejia and he resides in Florida, USA. He works in the computing industry. Nick will talk to us about his experience & hopefully allay any fears or doubts you may have about doing so yourself. It’s a great day out!

Episode highlights:

  • [01:48] - Nick introduces himself, based in Boca Raton, close to Miami
  • [03:27] - Drives a standard Honda day to day
  • [04:05] - Speaks about his day job in I.T.
  • [06:07] - What brought him to the racetrack. Stag Doo / Bachelors party
  • [07:05] - Don't blow your money in Vegas!
  • [08:00] - First time at racetrack, most popular Daytona, NASCAR, compares. Miami track for F1 may be added
  • [09:21] - Choose cars ahead of time or on the day? More ahead of time, planning required
  • [10:10] - 6 months notice, you may be able to try any car and have ultimate choice
  • [11:00] - Maclaren was the most in demand. Everyone wanted to ride it, in hindsight wished they got there earlier - so good planning is essential
  • [11:48] - Any safety issues, waivers to sign? Company has own insurance. Very few accidents happen.
  • [13:23] - Special clothing required? Beanie hat, helps helmet stay on
  • [14:20] - Homestead Miami Speedway is the name of the track he went on. Compares this to Daytona. Daytona substantially bigger.
  • [15:31] - Levels of difficulty Daytona vs Miami Speedway.
  • [16:44] - Top Speed you got to? Data given to you? 139mph, 222kmph. His mate in the Mustang GT got to 142.
  • [19:25] - Comparison to a professionals top speed on the same track and in the same car. He thinks 150-160mph, maybe more. Professionals aware of all turns/ apex etc on the track

  • [21:37] - Accompanied by trained professional. Many of them have driven in F1. Good to calm your nerves!
  • [22:57] - Speaks us through getting into the car. Ferraris/Lamborghini/Mustang, everything standard, unmodified vehicle, apart from few tools on the dash.
  • [24:38] - Do the pros give you hints and tips about the racetrack and how to handle it? Nick speaks us through. Mentions hand signals, which are very important when reaching high speeds, due to loudness inside the car.
  • [26:28] - Cost was $280 U.S. Pricey but experience is worth it.
  • [28:20] - Cars could be location dependent
  • [29:10] - Bugatti veyron fastest car ever built.
  • [30:25] - Does the racing package come along with evening entertainment? 10-12 guys on his day out. They offer video footage, few snacks, upstairs balcony with great views. If you go to Miami Speedway, best to venture into Downtown for evening entertainment.
