It’s the voice in your head screaming at you to put the barbell down. To give up on that small-business idea and go back to something easier. To get back to comfort at all costs. Tosh calls it the “mind’s mind.” “I have a mind, and the mind has a mind of its own,” he says. “And anytime we're faced with challenge; stress; we're under duress … this mind's mind kicks in, and it starts to inform the mind on what to do. And a lot of times that comes at odds with what I want to do.”Brian “Tosh” Chontosh is a retired Marine Corps officer and Nacy Cross recipient, the founder of Big Fish Foundation and Crooked Butterfly Ranch, a longtime CrossFit Seminar Staff member, and an ultra-endurance athlete (most recently, he rowed across the Atlantic Ocean as part of a four-man team in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge). You might think with a resume like that he’s got the mind’s mind conquered. That’s not the case. In fact, only by acknowledging the mind’s mind — observing it, challenging it, and learning from it — will you begin to scratch the surface of your potential. “I deal with it every day,” he says. “And I just keep fighting it. And I have good days, I have bad days … and my mind's mind is growing, getting stronger, and then it shows up … and then I’ve learned from it because I’m aware of it.” It’s not inherently bad — the mind’s mind, Tosh explains, is the reason we’re all still here today. Its role is to keep us alive, to guide us toward survival, safety, and comfort. The challenge is that safe, comfortable choices are at odds with most goals worth pursuing. “It's gotten so used to not having to be sharp that it sits in the safety loop, or the comfort loop,” Tosh says. “And unless we exercise challenging the mind’s mind’s ability to win in an argument, it doesn't need to grow much.”CHAPTERS: 0:00 Intro4:41 On being “alpha” 11:26 Understanding the mind’s mind18:36 Challenging the mind’s mind32:21 Becoming aware 38:52 The battlefield, the ballfield, the boardroom, and the breakfast table55:21 The mind’s mind — beyond the physical--Big Fish Foundation: https://www.bigfishfoundation.org/Crooked Butterfly Ranch and Diesel Days: https://www.crookedbutterfly.com/diesel-days---Infinitely Scalable Podcast: Helping entrepreneurs, creatives, and humans everywhere find freedom.
