S1, EP6: THE TOP 4 RESOURCES YOU NEED TO MATCH

Dr. Joselle Cook feels as if she was always interested in medicine, because she grew up in the back of her mother’s retail pharmacy. As she got older, she would help in the pharmacy, and through that experience gained an understanding of the role that various professionals play in medicine.

This led to her pursuing science subjects at the Naparima Girls’ High School in Trinidad, where she was born and grew up, before starting medical school at the University of the West Indies, Mona, in Jamaica.

Ironically, Dr. Cooke never planned on applying to medical residency in the United States, and only started on the path because one of her really good friends would not stop persuading her to take the USMLEs.  She matched into Internal Medicine at SUNY Downstate and is now pursuing a Hematology-Oncology fellowship at Mayo Clinic, with her sights set on a second fellowship.

Based on her success, on this episode of The IMG Residency Match Podcast, Dr. Cook shares her Top 4 resources IMGs need for their match journey.

Here’s what we talk about on this episode:

[9:56]  How Dr. Cooke changed during medical school

[11:49] What was her plan when she started studying for the USMLEs

[14:07] Why IMGs need high USMLE Step Scores

[14:21] The Top 4 Resources you need in your match journey

[20:03] How it feels to be in a Heme-Onc fellowship at Mayo Clinic at Rochester

[23:41] What she does for fun with her colleagues
